6:47 am
distraction and wanted to talk about the priorits of the whitit and versus the questions of the republicans and it came up on television and in brews about his birth certificate and whether or not there is proof that he was born in this country. they released three years ago his short form certificate of live birth. but with the private attorney returning from hawaii with a copy of the original long form birth certificate the president hopes to put it to bed and what the debate said about the politics and budget and two wars in libya and whether or not it is it a debate worthy of the american people. >> one of the most prominent voices is donald trump. he landed in new hampshire and gave a press conference and took credit and he said this
6:48 am
is what he called for. he upons to check the actual birth certificate. he think its is a good move and he will be boosted by this. jake, you have as well. the long form matches the hort form. we'll go to the president right now. >> let me comment first of all, on the fact that i can't get the networks to break in on all other kinds of discussion. i am lining to say it is amazing that he is not talking about national security. i would not have the networks break if if i was talking about that, chuck and you continue. as many of you have been briefed. we provided additional information today about the site of my birth. now, this issue has been going on for two, two and half years
6:49 am
now and i think it started in the campaign. i have to say over the last two and half years, i have watched with bemusement. i have been puzzled at the degree to which this thing kept on going. we've had every official in hawaii, democrat and republican, every new's outlet that has investigated this confirm that yes, i was in fact born in hawaii august 4th, 1961 in the kelani hospital. we posted certifiation begin by the state of hawaii for everybody to see. people have provided affidavits that they have seen this birth certificate and yet this thing just keeps on going.
6:50 am
now normally i would not comment on something like this because there is a lot of stuff wirling in the press on any given day and i have other thing to do. but two weeks ago, when the republican house had put forward a budget that will have huge consequences potentially to the country and when i gave a speech about my budget, and how i felt that we needed to invest in education and infrastructure and making sure we had a strongg safety net for our seniors, even as we are closing the deficit, during that entire week, the dominant new's story was not about huge monumental choices we have to make about the it was about my birth certificate and that was true on most news outlets that are represented here.
6:51 am
so i want to make a larger point here, we've got enormous challenges out there. there is a lot of the folks out there looking for work . everybody is still suffering under high gas prices. we are going to have to make a series was very difficult decisions about how we investigate in - invest in our future and get ahold of our deficit and debt and how to do it in a balanced way. this will generate huge and serious debates and important debates and there are fierce disagreements and that is good. that's how democracy is supposed to work and i am confident that the american people and america's political leaders can come together in a bipartisan way and solve these problems. we always have. but we're not going to be able
6:52 am
to do it if we are distracted. we are not going to be able to do it if we spend time vilifying each other and we will not be able to do it if we just make stuff up . pretend that facts are not facts. we are not going to be able to sov solour problems if we are distracted by side shows and carnival barkers . we live in a serious time right now and we have the potential to deal with the issues that we confront in a way that will make our kid and grand kid exercise grand kids proud. i have every confidence that america in the 21st century will come out on toop like we always have. but we will have to get serious to do it i know there will be a segment of people
6:53 am
for which no matter what we put up, this issue will not be put to rest. but i am speaking to the vast majority of the american people and to the press. we do not have time for this kind of silliness. we have better stuff to do. i have better stuff to do. we have big problems to solve and i am confident we can solve them but we are going to have to focus on them and not on this. thanks, very much. >> president obama saying he hopes that he puts this entire issue to rest and saying we don't have time for this silliness and important challenges to express. the president explaining why after the calls for two and half years, the president decided to get the long form from hawaii released. jake he seemed to chide those of us in the press and
6:54 am
carnival barkers for raising the issue . >> yes, that's right. he said political leaders are up to the challenges and employment and gas prices . it is not going to happen or rise to the challenge if we get distracted by side shows and carnival barkers. it was directly chastising of the people who bring up the issue that has been a nonissue for several years, but also to us in the media for not doing our yob and focusing on the serious issues facing the country. two weeks ago in the budget debate, the dominant issue was not on the budget debate but rather than on the birth certificate issue. >> the president making it clear that is the last he will say on the issue. he walked out. and you can look at the birth certificate on we'll have more on gma coming
6:55 am
